Frankenstein: The Powers of Science

Frankenstein is a revolutionary Gothic novel that has transcended time because of its advanced scientific ideas.

In chapter 3 Victor's curiosity is quickly expanding as he seeks to learn about the greatest scientists and philosophers of his time period. He is fascinated by Professor Waldman's ideas, specifically his belief of scientists:
" They have acquired new and almost unlimited powers; they can command the thunders of heaven, mimic the earthquake, and even mock the invisible world with its own shadows." Chapter 3 pg. 33

         - Analyze the quote above and explain its significance.
                     - What does Professor Waldman mean when he says that scientists can command the
thunders of heaven, mimic the earthquake, and mock the invisible world with its own
                       shadows?

                     - Give an example and a description of an invention made by a scientists that proves
Professor Waldman's statement to be true.

**Scientists can create inventions that can basically adjust the world that we live in (a job that only God should do)

**An example of such invention,is the Atomic Bomb. It can turn the day to night in a matter of of minutes. It can cause the ground to shake, that can be felt from miles away. One push of a button can literally destroy our planet.

Do Now: with this quote we understand that what they have created life in many ways. Scientists are the ones that create life on earth and in heave. For example, now a days, scientists were able to create artificial heart where people with heart conditions and people dont have to wait on a heart donor.

professor Waldman saying that scientists can command thunders of heaven ,mimic the earthquake and mock the invisible world with its shadows meaning that they have advantaged so much in science they can basicially do anything they want possible.

  7. Leeann;

what the quote means is with the study of science you can possibly do anything, the invention of todsy is machines to keep you alive breathing if you get into a bad accident .

  10. What Waldman ment was that scientists have found new ways to mimic or coy acts that one believed could have only been done by nature. For example creating light, fire, thunder,or life. They have found ways to create such things that are almost exactly like the actual thing.Scienttists have surpassed expectations of man and tried to go further. The man that cloned the sheep dolly and created a new life opening the door for stem cell research for human beings. Scientists are trying to be like God.

  12. When Professor Waldman says that scientists can command thunders of heaven, mimic the earthquake, and mock the invisible word with its shadows he means that scientists have the creativity to come up with an invention, ability to build it and the power to control their invention. Basically, scientists are the "God's" of earth.
For example, Thomas Edison the bright idea (ironically)of the light bulb, he had the ability to create it and with all that he gained the power to do whatever he wanted to do with the light bulb.

    - He means that scientists as well as anyone who wants to invent, has the power to create any new thing they want.

    - The artifical heart. Today, no one has to wait for a needed heart transplant. The artifical heart is used to replace the ill heart.

With science our limits arent out reached. For example in Bio medical engernering, there are people that create the prosthetics limbs that are needed for the disabled.
